Because of a higher volume of material moving through the City of Lawrence compost facility following recent severe thunderstorms, a planned city-load event has been changed to a self-load event.
Yard waste dropoff is not available during city-load events. With the switch to a self-load event, Lawrence residents may drop off yard waste including grass, leaves and brush. Residents will also need to bring their own tools, such as shovels and pitchforks, as city equipment will not be available.
The facility will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2 at 1420 E. 11th St.
Yard waste dropoff costs $10 for small and large loads and $20 for extra large loads. Brush must be loose, no longer than 4 feet and no more than 8 inches in diameter.

Plastic bags, lumber, pallets, sod, stones, food waste, metal, plastic, root balls and some other materials will not be accepted. See the full list at this link.
The event is open to Lawrence residents only. The compost facility has also updated its proof of residency requirements. It is now asked that residents bring a recent city utility bill and a matching photo ID. The bill may be shown on a phone and does not need to be printed.
The next city-load event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 6. It will be open to everyone. See this link for a full calendar of self-load and city-load events, plus an FAQ.
Self-loaded compost and woodchips are free for quantities of 20 gallons or less and $10 for larger amounts. The facility accepts cash only, and exact change is required.
