A draft of the updated Lawrence Bikes Plan is now ready for review, and local planners are seeking feedback for updates to a countywide bikeway plan.
The Lawrence plan evaluates current biking conditions and identifies goals to improve safety, increase ridership and develop low-stress bikeways within the city.
The original plan was approved in 2019. For the update, planners convened a steering committee, which started meeting in February 2025 and began seeking community feedback in April 2025.
The 211-page draft, which includes breakdowns of data and feedback gathered in community surveys, is available at this link.
The Lawrence Bikes Plan Update Steering Committee is set to meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 3 at Fire Station 5, 1911 Stewart Ave., to review the draft.

After that, there will be a 15-day public comment period, and steering committee members will review them to consider final revisions to the draft, according to the agenda.
Staff members will then present the plan to the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization Technical Advisory Committee, the Connected City Advisory Board, and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
The plan will ultimately go to the MPO Policy Board and the Lawrence City Commission for approval and adoption.
Countywide plan updates
Next up, the MPO has started an update to the Countywide Bikeway Plan, and its members are seeking community feedback.
“The Bikeway Plan guides infrastructure, policy, and education around bicycling in Eudora, Baldwin City, Lecompton, and the unincorporated areas of Douglas County,” according to an announcement from the board. “Regular updates track progress towards safer, more accessible cycling networks and ensure the guidance reflects community values and expectations.”
An online survey will be available through Monday, June 29 at this link. More information and future community engagement events will be posted on the city’s website at lawrenceks.gov/mpo/dgcountybikes.
The plan is expected to be ready by the end of the year, according to the announcement.
