Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest steam locomotive, is set to pass through the Union Pacific depot in North Lawrence on Thursday, July 23.
For the first time, the 85-foot-long, 380-ton locomotive journeyed to the East Coast to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. It’s now on its way back home to Wyoming.
The locomotive will spend two nights at Union Station in Kansas City, arriving at about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21. It will be open for public viewing from 5:30 to 8 p.m. It will also be open for viewing 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 22.
Big Boy will depart from Union Station at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, and is expected to pass through Lawrence sometime between its departure and 12:15 p.m., according to the North Lawrence Improvement Association and the Union Pacific online train schedule.
Times are subject to change, but Big Boy fans can use the Union Pacific tracker to watch where the locomotive is on its coast-to-coast tour.

For Lawrence-area viewers, the pass-through offers a rare look at a piece of rail history before the locomotive continues west through Kansas.
