A new large-scale mural is taking shape this week, inviting Lawrence residents to pick up a brush and help bring the project to life.
Artist Dave Loewenstein, Free State Brewing Company owner Chuck Magerl, and a team of volunteers have completed the design transfer of “Estamos Aquí / We Are Here,” a 20-by-50-foot mural on the side of Free State’s Eastside Brewery.
Working well into the night, the crew completed the design transfer early Sunday morning, according to a social media post from the brewery.
The public will get a chance to contribute to the new mural during a community painting event from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 31 at Eastside Brewery, 1927 Moodie Road.
The evening will pair hands-on artmaking with a festival-like atmosphere. The community can help paint sections of the mural. There will be beer from the brewery, food from Jack’s Franks and music by DJ Proof. Free watermelon slices will be available, and a tented area will have games and activities geared toward families.
Painting will continue the following day with a more casual, full-day session from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, offering additional opportunities for community members to leave their mark on the piece.

Friends of Lawrence Area Trails received grant funding from the Sunflower Foundation and the City of Lawrence’s community arts grant program to help pay for the project.
