As all the creepies come crawling for the haunted month of October, it signals the approach of one of the biggest events of the year for adult readers: Booktoberfest at the Lawrence Public Library.
At its (tell-tale) heart, Booktoberfest is a monthlong celebration all about bringing people together over a shared love of reading.
“Every year, I watch people leave feeling less alone, laughter rising as they exit, cheeks aching from smiling,” Polli Kenn, adult services supervisor, said in a news release. “… I love watching people make plans at the end of the night to meet up at the next Booktoberfest event, to be invited to someone’s book club, to be saying goodbye at the end of the event and getting a heartfelt ‘We have THE coolest library!'”

Booktoberfest kicks off from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 with the Book Nerd Trivia Party at Maceli’s Banquet Hall & Catering.
“Come for the snacks, beverages, and prizes, and stay to celebrate the joy of reading and the community it creates,” the library news release reads. You can register for trivia at this link.
The rest of the events will take place in October, including Camp Cryptid — a cozy but creepy book camp for adults — from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24 at the library, 707 Vermont St. Sign up at this link.
There will also be an author event with Paula Lafferty from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. Lafferty is the author of a trilogy starting with “The Once and Future Queen,” which retells Arthurian legend from Guinevere’s perspective. Folks can register for that evening at this link.
