Dust off your capes and tights — the whole family is welcome to dress up as superheroes and come play, make rainbow strings, smash piñatas, paint with sound and more at the Spencer Museum of Art’s Backyard Bash.

The “outdoor and indoor celebration of art and nature” is set for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11 directly behind the museum at 1301 Mississippi St. in Marvin Grove, on the plaza in front of the museum and inside the galleries, according to a KU news release.

“A variety of hands-on activities, games and performances will offer fun for all ages,” according to the release. “Activities in Marvin Grove will include creating rainbow-colored art from recycled plastic, gyotaku fish printing with the KU Natural History Museum, a photo opportunity with Baby Jay, a sound walk inspired by art on view in the exhibition ‘Looking After’ and more.”

“In front of the museum, attendees can get in touch with their inner child in a pop-up playground made from recycled materials, create chalk art and make percussion instruments,” the release continues.

Dressing as a comic book character or superhero is encouraged, and face painting and body art will also be available onsite to complete your getup. Folks can also “Paint with sound using musical paintbrushes and contribute to a community work of art in this unique multisensory experience,” according to the Facebook event page.

In addition, “Inside the galleries visitors can take a break and slow down by exploring the exhibition ‘Looking After: Art and Care in Education Across Kansas,’” according to the release. “There will also be fish specimens from the KU Natural History Museum, superhero mask-making and versions of the game ‘Guess Who?’ featuring artworks from the Spencer’s collection.”

Torched Goodness and Native Chef food trucks will be in the parking lot.
