A rededication of KU’s newly renovated David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium will honor Jayhawks who died serving in World War I with a new memorial installation.
The rededication is open to the public and will take place on Garlinghouse Plaza at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. Garlinghous Plaza is outside the convention center, at the northeast edge of the stadium.
The stadium was already dedicated to KU students who died in WWI, but a new memorial installation will include a walk of aluminum panels bearing the names of the 130 deceased KU students and faculty. The panels will also include stories of Jayhawks’ service and historical information about the war.
The university consulted with Christopher Warren, vice president of curatorial affairs and chief curator at KC’s National World War I Museum and Memorial, as well as Harrison Manlove, KU alum, on the project. Manlove identified a Jayhawk who had not been included in the university’s original WWI memorial listing during his research as an ROTC student.
Design and artwork for the panels were led by Multistudio, which KU has contracted for its Gateway District project.
“The ceremony will include remarks by Chancellor Douglas A. Girod; retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Mike Denning, assistant vice chancellor for national defense initiatives; and Col. Jabari Miller, deputy commanding officer – maneuver for the U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division,” according to a KU news release.
Campus parking lots and the Mississippi Parking Garage will be closed to faculty, staff, students and visitors in advance of the 6:30 p.m. football game that same day. Free parking will be available at Allen Fieldhouse parking garage. Regular game day shuttles will be in operation. Find more parking instructions here.
