A first-term Lawrence school board member has resigned from the board effective immediately.

Anne Costello was elected to her position in 2023, and her term was scheduled to end in January 2028.

“The decision was not made lightly. Due to personal circumstances, I find it necessary to step down at this time,” Costello wrote in a statement that board Vice President Bob Byers read during Monday’s meeting.

Costello wrote that serving on the board has been an honor and a privilege, and she’s grateful for the opportunity.

Board members approved Costello’s resignation as part of their consent agenda. The board will also publish a notice of the vacant seat.

The board will share a timeline and process to select a new board member during their Nov. 10 meeting.

Multiple board members have stepped down in recent years. Andrew Nussbaum stepped down in July 2022, and Kay Emerson resigned in May 2023.

Following application and interview processes, board members appointed GR Gordon-Ross in August 2022 to fill Nussbaum’s seat until January 2024, and they selected Bob Byers in June 2023 to fill Emerson’s seat until January 2026.

In addition, three board members will be elected in the Nov. 4 election. Meet the seven candidates at this link.

School board members are elected to unpaid four-year terms.
