Although some major construction projects in Lawrence are ongoing and will be for months to come, two key streets are close to reopening.
Here’s some good news from the city’s Friday traffic update.
Tennessee Street to reopen
Tennessee Street between Sixth and just south of Ninth streets in Old West Lawrence has had closures since March.
Starting Monday, Dec. 15, city contractors working on the Jayhawk Watershed project will reopen a closed lane on that section of the street.
Contractors will keep a lane closure in place just south of Ninth Street to complete sidewalk construction work in the area. The city anticipates that closure to end by Friday, Dec. 19, pending weather or other delays, according to the update.

Iowa Street getting finishing touches
As motorists may have noticed this week, Iowa Street is mostly open from 23rd Street to Irving Hill Road, bringing to an end construction work that began in January.
“At this time, final lane striping is being placed, and crews will work to install the permanent speed signs beginning Wednesday, December 17,” according to Friday’s traffic update. “Drivers should follow the posted speed limit while traveling through the area.”
The street will fully open by the end of next week, according to the city.
“The reconstruction delivers a fully rebuilt roadway along Iowa St., along with new sidewalks, upgraded pedestrian and bike facilities, modern lighting, and critical utility and drainage improvements,” the update continued. “Together, these upgrades are designed to provide a smoother, safer, and more reliable experience for everyone who travels the corridor.”
