Rec centers to close, trash pickup not delayed and more notes for MLK Jr. Day in Lawrence

Recreation centers will be closed, parking downtown will be free and trash pickup will run as scheduled.

Here are details and more notes ahead of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday in Lawrence — Monday, Jan. 19.

• City of Lawrence recreation centers and parks offices will be closed. That includes the Community Building, East Lawrence and Holcom Park recreation centers, Sports Pavilion Lawrence, Prairie Park Nature Center, the Indoor Aquatic Center, and administrative and cemetery offices.

This is the first year that almost all parks and recreation facilities will be closed on holidays when other city facilities are closed.

The former director of Parks, Recreation and Culture told members of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board in April that closing rec centers on holidays when all other city services are closed would save the city about $20,000 per year.

• Eagle Bend Golf Course will be open Monday from 8 a.m. to dusk, weather permitting.

• Solid waste pickup will not be delayed. The city last year announced a change to holiday trash pickup. Solid waste pickup is now only paused for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

• Parking downtown at meters and in lots will be free on the holiday. The customer service window at 933 New Hampshire St. will be closed.

• Lawrence Transit will be operating Routes 1-10 as usual. Regular T Lift and On Demand service will also be operating. Routes 11 and 12 will operate a reduced schedule, and routes 30-53 will not operate. Central Station will be closed for the holiday.

• City offices will be closed for the holiday.

• Douglas County offices, Douglas County District Court, the treasurer’s office, district attorney’s office and Senior Resource Center will be closed for the holiday.

• Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center will be closed Monday. The Treatment and Recovery Center of Douglas County at 1000 W. Second St. is available 24/7. The HeadQuarters Kansas crisis line is available at 988.

• Lawrence Public Library will be open for its regular hours, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and hosting a slate of events for the holiday. Read more at this link.
