Lawrence Transit will start charging $3 for each one-way on demand ride starting in March, and payments can be made through an app, web portal or a phone call.
Lawrence Transit On Demand allows riders to get to and from their destinations when regular buses aren’t available — between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays, from midnight to 6 a.m. Sundays, and during the day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
Fees will go into effect starting March 1, and the city will only accept payment via credit card, not cash or pass.
People can connect their credit card through the app or web browser by clicking on the person icon at the top left corner of the screen, per a city news release. Riders should select “Payments,” then “Add a Card” and enter credit card details before clicking “Set Up.” People can take cards off of their accounts by clicking on them and hitting “Remove.”
Alternatively, folks can securely add a card to their account by calling customer service at 785-864-4644.
The Connected City Advisory board opted to charge fares for on demand services, which were previously free to passengers, in a November meeting. Fixed-route buses will remain fare-free.
Most riders book rides through the Lawrence Transit On Demand app or online, but people can also call 785-864-4644 during business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, to schedule a ride in advance.
