It’s that time of year again — the time when many Kansans actually embrace one of the tropes for which we are known.
(Please don’t tell us “there’s no place like home” or ask us where our ruby slippers are, or we’ll send our flying monkeys after you.)
Sunflower fields are abloom in Douglas County at Grinter Farms and Hunsinger Sunflower Patch. Neither farm charges admission, but both welcome donations.
Hunsinger was unable to open last year because of both COVID-19 and poor weather conditions, according to a post on its Facebook page, but it’s back this year and welcoming visitors. Find it at 923 East 1450 Road in Lawrence. (See a map below.)
Grinter Farms, which has become a major tourist attraction, also posted a long list of rules, tips and disclaimers on its Facebook page. Among them: There is no restroom, and there never will be a restroom; “If you lost something in the field and it’s big enough to damage a combine…find it!”; take trash with you; Sparky is welcome, but please bring a leash; and please don’t block the driveway or park on the street.
