After a hiatus of more than two years, members of the New Horizons Band of Lawrence played a show Friday at Meadowlark Estates.

The band has two more performances coming up. The first is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 at Corpus Christi. Then they’ll take their talents on the road with a stop at Baldwin City’s Sullivan Square at 4 p.m. Friday, May 13.

Megan Poindexter, executive director of the Senior Resource Center for Douglas County, said via email that a part of the band’s mission “is to take concerts/music out to senior living communities where residents cannot typically access live performances. And, because of the impact of COVID on senior living facilities (having to close their doors and practice extreme safety protocols), this has been missing and missed.”

The band is a partner with the SRC. Johannah Cox is the director.

“Making music is something people can do through all stages of life,” according to the band’s Facebook group. “And that is the point of New Horizons Band, to offer an outlet for musicians 50 and older to continue developing and showcasing their musical skills.”
