The Lawrence Public Library invites the community to come learn some new things on Saturday, June 25.

At the library’s How-To Festival, more than 20 community members will share their expertise on a variety of topics. Some examples, according to a Wednesday news release, are how to raise chickens, brew your own beer, fix a flat bike tire and take the first steps toward learning to dance.

Visitors can “discover a new hobby, make new connections through similar interests, and learn something unexpected” at the festival, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25 on the library lawn, according to the release. There will also be opportunities to meet friendly foster dogs.

“As a public library, we have so many resources and can offer the community a huge platform. Our How-To Festival is a wonderful example of our mission to offer people the tools and spaces to thrive and find connection,” Melissa Fisher Isaacs, the library’s information services coordinator, said in the release. “This event is a one-day celebration of the larger work of community-building that the library represents.”

In addition, Lawrence Transit staff members will unveil the city’s new electric bus at 10 a.m. and offer an opportunity to take a ride in the new vehicle from 11 a.m. to noon. The bus is the first of seven that will replace city diesel-fueled buses, thanks to federal grants.

The library’s festival was inspired by the Louisville, Kentucky library’s festival that began in 2013. Lawrence launched its own in 2018 to showcase local talent and knowledge and to encourage people to learn something new from their neighbors and friends, according to the release.
