Military aircraft will fly over Lawrence and the KU football stadium Friday and Saturday.

The Jayhawks will face the Baylor Bears, with kickoff set for noon Saturday, Oct. 24.

Three V-22 Ospreys will practice flying over the football stadium at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23 ahead of the game, and fly over again a few minutes ahead of kickoff on Saturday.

“The aircraft are operated by Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 161 (VMM-161), a U.S. Marine Corps squadron based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego,” according to a Thursday news release from KU.

“The V-22 Osprey combines the vertical takeoff and landing capabilities of a helicopter with the speed and range of a fixed-wing aircraft, allowing Marines to transport personnel and equipment over long distances without relying on traditional runways,” the release continued. “Its distinctive design and ability to transition between helicopter-like vertical flight and airplane-style forward flight have also made it recognizable to audiences through action movies and popular culture.”
