Haskell Indian Nations University on Saturday hosted its Welcome Back Powwow, giving students an opportunity to come together for healing and tradition.
Moniqué Mercurio, of the Esselen Nation, is co-chair and community coordinator for the Indigenous Community Center. Mercurio said the event held special significance following the pandemic, “especially with Orange Shirt Day coming up.”
Orange Shirt Day is Friday, Sept. 30. It’s a day of remembrance, along with Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, to raise awareness of the tragic legacy of residential schools and honor the survivors.
