The Lawrence school district has announced Megan Epperson, Broken Arrow and elementary lead music teacher and current interim vice president of the Lawrence teachers union, as assistant director of human resources.

Epperson’s position is effective immediately, pending school board approval, according to a news release Monday.

“For the past nine years, the Broken Arrow family has been my home, encouraging me to grow and thrive into the educator and leader that I am today. I will greatly miss all of our Broken Arrow Eagles,” Epperson said in the release. “While I am sad to leave the Broken Arrow staff, I am excited for the new opportunities and challenges ahead. I have spent many years helping advocate for and support educators as a leader for the Lawrence Education Association. I look forward to serving our entire Lawrence Public Schools family.”

The district chose Epperson as its lead elementary music teacher in the fall. “In this role, she mentors novice music teachers, assists colleagues, and supports  the improvement of the district’s elementary music education program,” according to the release.

Executive Director of Human Resources Kristen Ryan said in the release that Epperson has excellent leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.

“Her involvement with LEA and its research of salary comparison data across Kansas school districts will support our goal to provide competitive staff wages,” Ryan said in the release. “Her experiences with new hire mentorship, professional development, and collaboration with other educators to achieve goals and overcome challenges make her a good fit to assist our continued efforts to recruit and retain only the best teachers to support student learning and success.”

Sarah Hamlin previously held the position of director of HR. She left to pursue a position in Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. The district evaluated the position as part of its budget planning process and changed it to an assistant director position, according to the release.
