Crews were at work Thursday morning in Lawrence to determine how exactly to move a massive boulder in order to return it to its rightful owners.
Lawrence city commissioners recently voted to return In´zhúje´waxóbe, a sacred prayer rock, to the Kaw Nation and formally apologize for misappropriating it in 1929.
The rock currently sits in Robinson Park at 4 W. Sixth St. Specialists from the University of Kansas on Thursday assessed the rock using ground penetrating radar, according to the city.
“The assessment will help us develop a plan to safely relocate In´zhúje´waxóbe,” the city posted on Facebook Wednesday. “Weather permitting, it will begin around 8 a.m. and should last 3-4 hours. The Kaw Nation pre-approved this assessment.”
