An upcoming info meeting will invite interested students to learn more about the 2023-24 Douglas County Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge.
The competition is open to students in grades six through 12 who live in Douglas County.
“The event consists of preparing an executive summary, giving an elevator speech and formal presentation, and having a trade show display,” according to the county’s website about the program.
Young aspiring entrepreneurs compete for $3,000 in prize money, and the first-place winner will have the opportunity to compete at the state level to potentially earn more prize money and honors.
“This will be the sixth year for the Douglas County event. During past competitions, students have pitched businesses that offer swimming lessons, resale clothing, jewelry, baked goods, pet sitting, and more,” the website continues.
The info meeting for young entrepreneurs, educators and entrepreneur support organizations is set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6 at Billy Mills Middle School, 2734 Louisiana St. Those interested in attending should RSVP or request more information by filling out the form at this link.
Representatives from Network Kansas, Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, KU Small Business Development Center, Black:30, CORE, K-State Research and Extension – Douglas County, Haskell Indian Nations University and Baker University will be present at the meeting, according to the website.
The deadline to apply for the challenge is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, and the competition itself will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday, Feb. 16 at the Dwayne Peaslee Technical Training Center, 2920 Haskell Ave.
