“The driver of a 2008 maroon Kia Sportage drove into oncoming traffic Wednesday afternoon and struck a 2017 Ford F150 east of 31st and Louisiana streets, which is the 1400 block of N 1300 Road,” George Diepenbrock, a spokesperson for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, said via email.

The driver of the Kia was Michael Landsness, 37, of Lawrence. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 34-year-old Coty Galbreath, of Kansas City, Missouri, was flown to a Kansas City-area hospital where he remained on Thursday, Diepenbrock said.

The driver and passenger in the F150 were taken by ground ambulance to area hospitals. Both have been treated and released.

“According to the preliminary crash investigation, the Kia was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound before crossing the center line and striking the pickup truck head-on as it traveled in the inside eastbound lane,” Diepenbrock said. “Any additional details will be part of the completed crash report.”
