Lawrence community members looking to take action and make their voices heard can throw their hats in the ring to serve on any of nine city advisory boards that will soon start from scratch.
Following a long process, the Lawrence City Commission voted in May to eliminate several previous advisory boards and commissions. The city is also realigning the boards it’s keeping, renaming some and limiting membership to seven people.
Here are the nine boards that are seeking all-new membership:
• Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
• Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission
• Historic Resources Commission
• Affordable Housing Advisory Board
• Community Police Review Board
• Human Relations Commission
• Aviation Advisory Board
• Connected City Advisory Board
• Environmental Sustainability Advisory Board
There’s a general application available via the city’s agenda website at lawrenceks.civicweb.net/Portal/BoardApplication.
There’s a separate application for folks who want to join the new version of the Community Police Review Board. That’s available at the same link.
Any current members of the boards will need to reapply if they want to be considered to keep their spots. Their terms will all end Aug. 31.
“The restructure of City boards and commissions does not affect or change our technical appeals boards, steering committees or task forces, component unit governing boards, joint city/county boards, or boards with City appointees,” according to a city news release about the changes.
Lawrence city commissioners plan to discuss during their Tuesday, July 16 meeting how they will make all the appointments.
The new boards will start meeting on or after Sept. 1. Board service is on a volunteer basis.
