Haskell Indian Nations University will soon offer a new agriculture business degree program aimed at empowering Native American farmers and ranchers.
“Participating in governing is a time honored and sacred tradition in our Indigenous communities. Our ancestors and relatives survived against seemingly insurmountable odds, which is why we owe it to them to make our voices heard at the ballot box,” Deb Haaland, Secretary of the Interior, writes in this column.
A federal government investigation into its own oversight of Native American boarding schools — used in the late 1800s to mid-1900s to force children into cultural assimilation — will most likely include an examination of Haskell Indian Nations University.
