An upcoming environmental film festival in Lawrence will support Friends of the Kaw while encouraging viewers to advocate for the Kansas River.
The Kansas River is cleaner today than half a century ago, but pollution and trash remain problems. Kayakers and others who love this river are helping the river’s sandbars by hauling away tons of garbage.

The annual Kansas Riverbank Cleanup in Lawrence, which draws more than 100 volunteers each year, is coming up the weekend before Earth Day.
Friends of the Kaw volunteers dig 2 to 6 tons of battery cases out of sandbars each year. They tackle items as big as septic tanks. Now they’re eyeing an ambitious cleanup target for 2030.
The City of Lawrence and several of its hired contractors are facing allegations of negligence and property damage related to a construction project along the bank of the Kansas River adjacent to the Riverfront Plaza.
