The journalists on staff of the Indian Leader, the student news publication of Haskell Indian Nations University, earned an impressive haul of 14 National Native Media awards for their work over the past year.

Altogether, the staff won four first-place, four second-place and three third-place awards, plus three honorable mentions, from the Native American Journalists Association, NAJA announced Wednesday. The awards recognize outstanding Indigenous journalism.

Among the Indian Leader’s awards was first place for General Excellence in the category of print and online media.

“As you know the past year dealing with the pandemic showed how crucial having our students continuing to report stories to their peers is invaluable,” Rhonda LeValdo, faculty adviser for the Indian Leader, wrote in a news release. “Congratulations to our students and Onward Haskell!”
