Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church and Family Promise of Lawrence will soon celebrate the opening of Promise Heights, a new six-family housing community intended to support families experiencing housing crises.

The public ribbon cutting is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at 909 Tennessee St. Remarks and the official ribbon cutting will begin at 4:30 p.m. Community members can take a tour and learn about the project.

Takisha Derritt, project chair, encourages attendees to RSVP at this link by Friday, Aug. 21 to help ensure they have enough food, though an RSVP is not required to attend.

Promise Heights was developed through a partnership between Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church and Family Promise of Lawrence. Form and Function constructed the housing community, and Family Promise will operate it through its housing program.

Families who live in the community will have access to affordable housing, individualized case management, financial education and other supportive services aimed at helping them achieve long-term housing stability and independence.

“Promise Heights reflects what is possible when a community comes together around a shared purpose,” Derritt said in a news release. “We envisioned a place that would offer more than housing … it would offer hope, dignity, and opportunity for families working toward a brighter future.”

Brenda Wahl, executive director of Family Promise of Lawrence, said the organization was honored to carry out the church’s vision forward.
