The family of Daniel Evan Brooks, the 66-year-old man who was fatally stabbed in a grocery store parking lot on Wednesday morning, has launched an online fundraiser to help with funeral expenses.

Jacob Brooks, nephew of “Danny,” wrote on a GoFundMe page about how his father had helped Danny move from Wichita, where he had been living on the street, to Lawrence, “where he could have a roof over his head and hot meals whenever he wanted.”

Danny was never married and had no children, Jacob wrote, but he did have a dog — Bear — “and there was no way he was going to move without his boy.”

Exactly what happened Wednesday is still unclear, Jacob wrote, but Bear was also stabbed, as we have reported. The dog has been recovering at the Lawrence Humane Society.

Danny was gentle, quiet, and loving, Jacob wrote in the post. “He was loved greatly and is missed desperately.”

“In describing their relationship, my dad told me a story of how one day, when they were younger, he showed up on Danny’s doorstep unannounced with a U-Haul full of his belongings, asking on the porch if he had room for my dad,” Jacob wrote. “Danny answered simply, ‘Yes’ with no other questions. It was his way to be endlessly generous to anyone and everyone.”

“This GoFundMe was made with the hope of covering cremation and celebration of life expenses while giving my dad a chance to grieve his brother and room mate,” Jacob wrote.

The GoFundMe can be found at this link. As of 2:40 p.m. Saturday, it had reached almost $3,600 of its $10,000 goal.

Bear’s slightly scruffy, mostly-black fur is tinged with gray around his nose and paws. His big brown eyes might not appear quite as sad if we didn’t know what he had been through in the past couple of days. But we know that Wednesday morning, Bear was stabbed and went into shock.
