2 suspects arrested in fatal shooting in Lawrence

Two people have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday, Nov. 24 in Lawrence, police announced Thursday.

Lawrence police found 18-year-old Peyton Whitaker, of Topeka, suffering from a gunshot wound when they arrived to a residence in the 200 block of Yorkshire Drive around 9:15 p.m. Nov. 24, according to a news release Thursday. Whitaker died at the scene.

On Wednesday, Lawrence police working with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and McPherson County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 20-year-old and a 24-year-old, both of Topeka, in connection with the shooting. The 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder and felony theft, and the 24-year-old was arrested on suspicion of interference with law enforcement and obstructing apprehension or prosecution, according to the release.

Both suspects were being held at the McPherson County jail pending extradition, according to the release.

According to his obituary, “Peyton deeply loved his family and his pets. He genuinely loved nature and being outdoors. He made friends easily and wanted to help anyone he could.”
