KU Holiday Vespers, Jazz Vespers free to attend this year; livestream available

Tickets are free for the University of Kansas School of Music’s 97th annual Holiday Vespers and Jazz Vespers, and there is an option to livestream the performances this year.

The Holiday Vespers shows will feature the KU Choirs, conducted by Eduardo García-Novelli, Melissa Grady and Dwayne Dunn; the KU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Carolyn Watson; and the KU Trumpet Ensemble, conducted by Steve Leisring, according to a news release. Those shows are set for 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5 at the Lied Center.

“Both performances will include music by Coleridge-Taylor, Tchaikovsky, Burleigh, Thomas, Memley, Handel, Britten and more. The audience will have a show of both seasonal favorites and classical works,” the release states. “Repertoire highlights include the ‘Sleeping Beauty Waltz,’ ‘Sleigh Ride’ and the ‘Die Fledermaus Overture.'”

The Jazz Vespers show will feature the Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Dan Gailey, with special guest vocalist Vanessa Thomas.

“This Jazz Vespers performance will offer seasonal favorites featuring the popular Kansas City vocalist’s seamless span of five octaves and unique versatility,” the release states.

That performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9.

All performances are free thanks to sponsors Reach Out Kansas Inc. and the Law Offices of Smithyman & Zakoura, but they require tickets to attend in person. To reserve tickets, call 785-864-2787 or visit the Lied Center ticket office in person.

The 7:30 p.m. Sunday Holiday Vespers performance and the Jazz Vespers will be livestreamed via the Lied Center’s website at this link.
