City service changes, when parking is free and more to know for Memorial Day weekend in Lawrence

Here’s a quick roundup of info about City of Lawrence service changes and more ahead of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

• Parking: Parking at meters and in lots and garages will be free on Monday, May 30, according to a news release from the city.

• Buses and transit: There will be no Lawrence Transit System T or T Lift service on Monday.

• Emergency services: Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical and Lawrence police emergency services will be available as usual, but administrative offices will be closed for the holiday.

Solid waste collection:

Residential solid waste and recycling collection will be delayed by one day. Regular Monday customers’ service will be on Tuesday, and so on.

There will be no yard waste collection and no bulk item pickup throughout the holiday week. There will be no roll-off services and no cart/dumpster swaps, deliveries or maintenance service on the holiday or Saturday of the holiday week, according to the city.

Commercial solid waste routes will be collected on schedule except that there will be no cardboard recycling service outside of the downtown district on Monday, according to the city.

Parks & Recreation:

Most facilities will follow their normal operating hours on Memorial Day. The Community Building, East Lawrence Rec Center and Holcom Park Rec Center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sports Pavilion Lawrence will be open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Prairie Park Nature Center will be closed for the holiday.

Eagle Bend Golf Course will be open for tee times with normal operating hours.

The Indoor Aquatic Facility will have alternate hours for the weekend:

  • Saturday, May 28: Lap swimming from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 29: Lap swimming from 1 – 6 p.m.
  • Monday, May 30: Lap swimming from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 4-7:30 p.m.; warm water workouts from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The waterslide, diving area and zero-depth/children’s area will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

The Outdoor Aquatic Facility will not open for the season until Monday, June 6.

There are no recreational classes, special populations, lifelong recreation, youth sports or preschool open gym gymnastics, or Tumble “N’ Play, from Saturday through Monday, according to the city’s release, and there are no adult sports leagues on Sunday or Monday.

Other closures:

City of Lawrence and Douglas County offices will be closed Monday for the holiday.

Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health’s clinic and office will be closed Monday.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed on Sunday and Monday and will reopen at 10 a.m. Tuesday. However, the online library is open 24/7.
