Lawrence Tenants are inviting renters to an “Imagination Session” on Thursday to dream up what changes they want to see next for the local housing landscape.

The group celebrated the Lawrence City Commission’s approval in February of source of income protections, an ordinance change that creates a protected class that means landlords will not be able to discriminatorily deny someone housing just because their rent money will come from a housing voucher, settlement, benefit, subsidy, Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing voucher or other income source.

The change also disallows discrimination based on someone’s status as a survivor of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking or stalking, or based on prospective tenants’ immigration status. The ordinance changes are set to take effect in June.

“What’s next? Join an Imagination Session where renters across Lawrence will dream up what you want to change + how you can make it happen together,” according to the Facebook event page.

The event is set for 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6 at the Lawrence Public Library auditorium. Organizers note that “this will be a space for tenants only (no landlords, policymakers, etc) so we can discuss our issues openly with each other.”
