The Lied Center’s 2023-24 season is packed with a variety of music, dance, theatre and more, including a big name who will bring Lawrence community members into his show.

The Lied is celebrating a big milestone with this season: its 30th anniversary.

“Through the years, we have shared so many collective experiences with the community, from engaging performances and events to weathering a global pandemic,” Derek Kwan, executive director of the Lied Center, said in a news release announcing the season lineup.

“We’re so grateful to our Friends of the Lied and the entire community for supporting us through it all, enabling the Lied Center stage to thrive and celebrate this milestone year.”

Mandy Patinkin, award-winning actor, singer and storyteller, will visit Lawrence April 1, 2024 for “Mandy Patinkin In Concert: BEING ALIVE.” He’s no stranger to the town as he attended KU in the 70s and performed in “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Buddy Guy, a blues icon, winner of numerous Grammy awards and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, will perform on Nov. 6. The 86-year-old’s “Damn Right Farewell” tour signifies the end to many years of touring and performing all over the world.

World renowned trumpet player and composer Terence Blanchard will perform “Film Scores Live!” on Nov. 2. That show will feature movie music of Spike Lee. It will include Blanchard’s ensemble, The E-Collective, “with special guest vocalists — and, for this engagement, members of the Lawrence Community Orchestra,” according to the Lied Center.

Comedian Nikki Glaser — another KU alum — will bring her unfiltered comedy to the Lied stage on Oct. 29.

Some dance performances include Hiplet Ballerinas (pronounced “hip-lay”), a “trailblazing fusion” of hip-hop and ballet, and Tetris – Created by Arch8, “innovative and family-friendly dance work inspired by the video game” that highlights acrobatics and the dancers’ extreme physicality.

Keep an eye out for an announcement on May 8 of a “legendary rock group” coming to the Lied in October, and on June 26 for an announcement of a Broadway show that’s coming to town in November.

Tickets are on sale now for Friends of the Lied. Ticket packages go on sale to the general public on May 22, and single tickets will be available on June 5.
