The Lawrence school board on Tuesday will choose four applicants to advance to interviews for a vacant seat on the board.

Kay Emerson on May 26 announced her resignation from the board. As part of Tuesday’s special meeting, the remaining six board members will narrow down the pool of eight applicants to four to interview.

Daniel Businger, Robert (Bob) A. Byers, Paul L. Carttar, Anne Costello, Jeni Daley, Rebekah Gaston, Milton Scott and Rachel I. Thomas are the eight applicants for the vacant seat. Learn more about them in this article.

Interviews will be held publicly during the board’s next regular meeting on Monday, June 26. Board members will then select one applicant through a ranked vote to fill the remainder of the term, through Jan. 12, 2026.

The school board meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 20 at district offices, 110 McDonald Drive. Meetings are open to the public, livestreamed on the district’s YouTube channel and broadcast on Midco channel 26. Full meeting agendas are available online.

Because it is a special board meeting, there will be no public comment on Tuesday.
