The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics on Saturday celebrated what would have been the former U.S. senator’s 100th birthday.

Dole served in the U.S. Army during World War II, represented Kansas in the U.S. House and Senate for decades, advocated for disability rights and more before dying at age 98 in December 2021.

Earthwork artist Stan Herd, Gov. Laura Kelly, Dole’s daughter Robin Dole and many community members came out for the dedication of Herd’s artwork in Dole’s honor.

Attendees could also walk around the perimeter of the earthwork and see the 1,000-plus tiles featuring artwork created by Kansans.

August Rudisell/Lawrence Times More than 1,000 drawings by Kansans were sealed onto tiles to create the circle around Stan Herd’s earthwork of Bob Dole.
