Amid ongoing hardships and financial struggles, Decade, the East Lawrence coffee shop and cafe, will soon close its doors permanently.

“To all of our regulars and friends and those who decided to come and hang out with us over a cup of coffee – we would like to thank YOU (yes, you) for being there for us and for showing up in all of your incredible ways – from coming to our events, to hanging out and supporting us and our mission, and most importantly – for sharing a cup of coffee with us,” an Instagram post from Decade states. “We really appreciate you and everything you have done for us and for helping us keep our vision alive.”

However, the cafe at 920 Delaware St. must close permanently on Friday, Oct. 13, according to the post.

The cafe had transitioned to an employee-ownership model in the past few months.

From that experience, “we know that not just as baristas, but everyone from all walks of life is better off working for ourselves, instead of for a big unforgiving capitalistic machine,” the post stated. “We are excited about this precedent this group, among others, is setting for our local industry.”

The cafe had launched a GoFundMe recently to try to keep the business alive.

“Your incredible donations to our gofundme will be split evenly amongst our crew to help us find new gigs in the meantime,” according to the post.

“Again, thank you for all of your support and love for us in this difficult time. We will still be open and slinging drinks for these next two weeks,” the post stated.
