The Lawrence Times reported this week on increasing rates for stormwater and trash being considered by the Lawrence City Commission. The increases approved Tuesday evening will not cover operating costs, and the fund balance will be decreased by $570,000 for solid waste in 2024. City utility rates have been escalating at an unsustainable rate over the last few years.
The City Commission should review rates for utilities as they compare to surrounding communities. This has been done in the past. It should raise questions about how we manage these services as a municipality. If Lawrence is found to be well above other communities, what steps should be put in motion to stem this tide?
The city’s Affordable Housing Advisory Board has requested consideration of payment plan options for residents experiencing financial difficulties. This is certainly a reasonable request for city staff to consider. However, the bigger issue at hand seems to be ignored. Rising utility rates impact all residents. Lawrence is quickly becoming a community that is unaffordable to more than those experiencing financial difficulties.
