That’s about a week earlier than the past few years, when the pool has opened in early June.

Lindsay Hart, assistant director of recreation for Lawrence Parks and Recreation, shared the news with the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board Monday.

Hart said the department is also working with staff to hopefully keep the pool open through Labor Day, which is Monday, Sept. 2. In recent years, the pool has closed in mid-August.

The city is hoping to open its splash pads for the season next week, Mark Hecker, assistant director of parks for LPRD, told the board.

The splash pad at Burroughs Creek Trial is planned to open Monday, May 20, according to the city’s website. The opening date was not yet listed for the Lyons Park splash pad in North Lawrence or for the South Park wading pool.

Splash pads will be open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. throughout most of the summer season, according to the website. The outdoor pool’s hours for the season are yet to be announced.

The city is in the planning process for $6.1 million in renovations to the outdoor pool. Planning is anticipated to be completed this summer.
