Following the shooting deaths of three local teens within 15 months, Lawrence school district Superintendent Anthony Lewis is calling a community meeting to discuss safety.

Isaiah Neal, 17, was shot and killed outside his home on June 13. Isaiah had been close with Brianna Higgins, who was shot and killed in January in Olathe.

Buried next to Brianna is 14-year-old Kamarjay Shaw, who was shot and killed in March 2023 in Lawrence. Kamarjay was also a friend of Isaiah’s.

“What else can we do to support our young people in this community, ensure that they are safe?” Lewis said. “… We don’t have a plan, but what we know we cannot do is just not do anything.”

Parents, students, city officials, elected officials, community partners, and anyone else who would like to be involved is invited to meet “to just begin those conversations,” Lewis said Monday at the end of the school board’s meeting.

The meeting is set for at 6 p.m. Monday, July 1 at Lawrence High School, 1901 Louisiana St.
