An upcoming event at Liberty Hall will feature a screening of the documentary “Bad Faith: Christian Nationalism’s Unholy War on Democracy” followed by a panel discussion to dive deeper.

The panel will include award-winning investigative journalist Anne Nelson, who was featured in the documentary; Amber Sellers, Lawrence city commissioner; Laurel Burchfield, advocacy director of Mainstream Civic Engagement; and other panelists to be announced.

The event is set to begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31 at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St. in Lawrence. Tickets cost $12.50 and are available for purchase at this link.

Michael Poppa, executive director at Mainstream, said in a news release announcing the screening that Christian nationalism is “a dangerous movement to strike down our constitutional right to the separation of church and state,” and that it’s “becoming a common and even accepted concept in our political conversations and policy.”

“Christian Nationalists are determined to force their narrow religious beliefs on everyone, ban all abortions without exception, erase LGBTQ+ people and their families, and dismantle public education,” Poppa said in the release. “Those who value civil liberties need to start paying attention now before we cross over into an actual theocracy in our country.”

Nelson said in the release that Christian nationalism is a threat to our democratic institutions and our way of life.

“Many of our forefathers came to this country to escape tyrants who wanted to impose their religious dogmas and practices on others,” Nelson said in the release. “We must defend these precious freedoms for ourselves and for the generations to come.”

A second screening and panel will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 at Glenwood Arts Theater in Overland Park.

The documentary is currently streaming on multiple platforms, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Tubi.
