A fire that damaged 48 units at a Lawrence retirement community on Monday was an accident caused by improper discarding of smoking material, according to Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical.
“The origin of the fire was determined to be on the 3rd floor balcony deck” of Brandon Woods at Alvamar, according to an update from LDCFM on Wednesday. “The fire extended into the attic of the structure.”
Altogether, 85 residents were taken to a nearby condo building as first responders worked to put out the fire on Monday.
In addition to the 48 damaged units, approximately 8,200 square feet of roofs have been reported as damaged, according to the release.
Two units have heavy damage, five have moderate damage and five have minimal damage from fire, smoke and water, according to the release. Another 36 units have damage from water.
There were no reports of any injuries to residents. One Lawrence police officer was taken to an area hospital for smoke inhalation, but she is going to be OK, according to the Lawrence Police Department.
