The Douglas County Treasurer’s Office announced Wednesday that it will soon open a larger and more accessible location in Lawrence as it closes one of its current locations.
Beginning Monday, Oct. 28, the Treasurer’s Office will offer services in two Lawrence locations: the remaining one at the historic county courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St., and a new office at 2601 W. Sixth St. Both will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
With the expansion, the treasurer’s office will close its satellite location at 2000 W. 31st St. in south Lawrence at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, according to a county news release. That space, which takes up 1,086 square feet, is leased by the county for $28,000 annually.
The new, 5,054-square-foot space is on the south side of Sixth Street between Schwarz Road and Crestline Drive, next to Econolodge. It will include a lobby with chairs and a dropbox, and the parking area will be up close, according to the release. It’s located on property that the county purchased with federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds and then renovated using money from the capital improvement contingency fund. The total cost of the project is $1.6 million.
“We are excited to offer our services in a larger building that will have more parking spaces and a lobby area,” Douglas County Treasurer Adam Rains said in the release. “It will be more accessible than our current locations.”
The Treasurer’s Office will continue to operate its Baldwin City office, which is inside Baldwin City Market, 112 Eighth St., and is open for the second full week of each month.
Residents can also renew their motor vehicle taxes and pay property taxes on the treasurer’s office’s website, dgcoks.gov/treasurer.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25 at the new Sixth Street office. It’s free to attend and the public is welcome.
