No residents or firefighters were injured, but a home is significantly damaged after an overnight fire in the Pinkney neighborhood in Lawrence.
Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical first responders were dispatched at 3:24 a.m. Friday to a fire at 408 Indiana St. Initial reports indicated the back porch of the residence was on fire and it was spreading to the main structure, according to a news release from the department.
Heavy fire was already showing when LDCFM arrived at the three-story home. Crews searched to make sure occupants and a dog had safely evacuated, according to the release.
“LDCFM crews achieved a partial knockdown of the main body of the fire within 20 minutes, but the incident required over an hour of continuous fire attack and checking for extension throughout the second floor and attic space,” according to the release. “Despite challenging conditions, including construction type and significant heat and smoke, crews were successful in stopping the fire spread and keeping the fire from threatening impacting houses on either side.”
The fire was declared under control at 4:40 a.m., according to the release.
The Red Cross is assisting the resident, according to the release, and the cause of the fire was under investigation as of 9:30 a.m. Friday.
“LDCFM would like to remind residents to ensure that all smoke detectors are in working condition and to practice home fire safety,” according to the release. “Early detection and preparedness can make a critical difference in fire emergencies.”
