Local bicycle riders will travel down trails by the Kaw River to usher in 2025.
Lawrence Mountain Bike Club invites the community to join for the ride through River Levee Trail in North Lawrence on New Year’s Day.
The annual activity is one of the club’s oldest traditions, according to a Facebook event page. Afterward, the group plans to head over to Johnny’s Tavern North for food and refreshments.
Organizers said the ride is beginner-friendly, so any bike is welcome, but they recommend mountain bikes or gravel bikes with medium to wide tires.
The ride is scheduled for noon Wednesday, Jan. 1 beginning at the Levee Trail parking lot at Second and Locust streets. It’s free to attend and open to the public.
The start time may be adjusted based on the level of water freeze to the trail. Organizers said riding on the trail during the winter is contingent upon completely frozen ground, and warmer temperatures that cause thawing make the trail too soft.
Keep an eye on the bike club’s Facebook page for updates.
