The National Weather Service in Topeka received several reports of snow totals in Lawrence following Sunday’s blizzard. The highest was a total of about 11.5 inches.
That report came from northern Lawrence, near McDonald Drive and Interstate 70, said NWS meteorologist Sarah Teefey.
Additional reports of about 11 inches of snow came from central and western Lawrence, Teefey said.
It could take a while to dig out, and officials are encouraging folks to stay off the roads except for absolute essential needs and emergencies. (See a list of Monday’s weather-related closures at this link.)
The next concern will be the incoming Arctic air, Teefey said Sunday night.
There’s a cold weather advisory in effect until 11 a.m. Monday, and wind chills are expected to be around 15° below zero Monday morning. That kind of cold will probably persist over the following two mornings as well, Teefey said.
The NWS advises that cold can cause frostbite on exposed skin very quickly. Anyone going outside should cover up appropriately, and people should keep pets inside as much as possible.
However, the next few days should be dry, sunny and clear, with winds of around 5 to 10 mph, according to the NWS forecast.
