I appreciate that this publication covers the accomplishments of our high school artists. Sports play an important role in the lives of students, but there are many great things happening in the arts that deserve recognition too.
In light of this, recently there was an event at Lawrence High that should be celebrated and talked about for months to come.
The LHS Theater production of Hadestown was spectacular. Bravo to Theater Director Craig Fisher for pulling off an incredible feat.
I’ll admit I was skeptical of such a complex and dynamic show in the hands of a high school. My doubts turned to goosebumps, and I caught my theater-going partner wiping away tears.
This performance was a much-needed respite and a powerful reminder of the integral role artists play in reflecting our humanity back to us and helping us believe that spring can come again.
The production deserves much more discussion than can fit in this space, but let’s at least put to print the remarkable cast: Beatrix Johnson, Adelle Spiess, Magnus Pollington, Thomas Sikes, Provi Fowler, Giulia Ventello, Ruby Hull and Renee Dvorske. The accompanying live musicians took the show to another level. Music Director Dr. Dwayne “Triple D” Dunn deserves a story of his own. With his impending retirement, time may be short to give him his due.
Congrats to the entire cast and crew. You wrenched my heart and injected it with hope. Encore!
