Lawrence and parts of northeastern Kansas should expect rain and thunderstorms overnight into Tuesday, followed by possible snow Tuesday night into Wednesday.
Storms are likely to develop in the early hours of Tuesday and could bring damaging hail and wind, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka. Lawrence has an 80% chance of precipitation overnight into Tuesday morning.
That’s followed by a 90% chance of precipitation — rain and possibly thunderstorms — throughout the day Tuesday. There’s a chance of snow after 3 a.m. Wednesday.
“Rain is forecast to change over to snow Tuesday evening. These winds with falling snow could create blizzard conditions,” according to NWS. “The snow amounts are not going to be the problem but white out conditions could make travel nearly impossible while the snow is falling.”
NWS has issued a high wind watch, in effect from noon Tuesday through noon Wednesday. Winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are possible.
“Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” according to NWS.
However, Wednesday is expected to be partly sunny with a high of 40°, followed by a high near 50° on Thursday, according to the forecast. There’s a chance of rain returning Friday, but temperatures should near the 60s, according to NWS.
The weekend is expected to be mostly sunny and clear, with highs of 52° on Saturday and 63° on Sunday.
