Ninth Street Missionary Baptist Church is inviting the community to celebrate the impending construction of six units of affordable housing near downtown Lawrence.
The Hope Project includes the six-unit building, to be constructed at 909 Tennessee St., which is currently a parking lot, and an existing four-unit building at 913 Tennessee will remain for a total of 10 affordable housing units.
A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 23 at the project site.
“Thanks to the hard work and generosity of 9STMBC board, congregation and community partnerships, the Hope Project six-plex affordable housing development will become a safe haven for Douglas County families supported by Family Promise programs!” organizers said in a news release.
The development received $300,000 from the city’s affordable housing trust fund.
“The land is owned and donated by 9STMBC,” according to the release. “This project was designed as a blue print to show other faith based organizations and businesses that you can utilize your land for the greater good.”
The church, 9STMBC, is one of the longest-standing in the community at 162 years old.
