No residents or firefighters were injured but three people were displaced after an apartment fire Tuesday night in Lawrence.

McKenzi Ezell, chief of staff for Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, said via email that firefighters arrived at the fire just after 11 p.m. Tuesday at one unit of a two-story apartment building at Union Flats Apartments, 2500 W. Sixth St.

Callers had reported smoke and flames, and occupants were leaving the building, she said.

“Firefighters quickly deployed hoses to the second floor to attack the fire, while primary searches were conducted on both the first and second floors,” Ezell said.

The fire was knocked down by 11:12 p.m., and it was declared under control just before 11:30 p.m., she said.

Three people were displaced as a result of the fire, and they are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, Ezell said.

“Carbon monoxide checks were performed, and after ensuring safety, residents of adjacent units were allowed to return to their apartments,” Ezell said.

Investigators were assigned to determine the cause of the fire, which was still to be determined as of Wednesday afternoon “with investigators evaluating potential accidental causes,” Ezell said.

LDCFM wants to remind the community to ensure smoke alarms are working and to follow evacuation procedures in case of fire emergencies, she said.
