The Lawrence Arts Center’s youth curatorial board, Hang12, is inviting the public to a celebration where young artists will unveil their new artwork in the New Hampshire Street parking garage.
Hang12 is an art entrepreneurship program through the Lawrence Arts Center that trains high school students to plan and run art shows and events in the community. The program is meant to give young artists an inside look at the art world and what it takes to create events.
The new public artwork will be installed over parking stalls in the first level of the New Hampshire Street garage. The works feature flora and fauna native to the state of Kansas.
The event will begin at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 28 in the Lawrence Arts Center lobby, 940 New Hampshire St. Attendees will have a chance to meet the artists.
Speakers — including the Hang12 artists, Hang12 project facilitator Alicia Kelly, and local multidisciplinary artist Mona Cliff — will give remarks starting at 5 p.m.
After the speakers, attendees will head across the street to the garage to cut a red ribbon to unveil the new work by Hang12, and to celebrate the “Welcome to Lawrence” mural that Cliff completed last year.
Applications for high school students to join the Hang12 program are open through Monday, May 25. Learn more on their website at hang12.org.
