Community members are invited to help paint a new mural in the Lawrence Public Library parking garage and learn about Native American culture and representation through art.

Tokeya Waci U Richardson, Oglala Lakota and Haliwa-Saponi, was selected by the Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission to paint a mural on the ground-level, west-facing wall opposite the stairs on the Vermont Street side of the structure at 725 Vermont St.

“With the intention of including the community to come and paint with me is to plant the seeds of growth,” Richardson said in a recent interview. “Maybe I’m planting the seed for this future artist … for this person that will one day paint a mural here in the city that they love and grew up in, too. But it’s also planting seeds for opening everyone’s mind’s eye about, you know, there’s no supreme culture here.”

Weather permitting, folks can help Richardson with the mural from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 29 in the garage.
