The University of Kansas will host an open house for Kaw House, a newly completed supportive housing project designed and built by architecture students and faculty.
The project is located at 613 N. Third St. and was developed by KU’s Dirt Works Studio in partnership with Tenants to Homeowners to provide high-performance housing for individuals transitioning out of homelessness, according to a news release from KU.
A ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. Friday, May 15 will be followed by an open house until 2 p.m.
The project is the first use of mass plywood panel construction in Kansas, a mass timber system that improves energy efficiency while offering durability and visual appeal, according to the release.
Designed as a compact, sustainable home, Kaw House features a highly insulated, airtight building envelope, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, and architectural elements that maximize natural light.
The project also serves as a hands-on educational experience for KU students, who participated in the design-build process while learning about construction, materials and community-focused architecture. Learn more at this link.
